Things To Do This Halloween Mid Term Break

Looking to entertain the kids with some fun and unique activities in the area this mid-term break? At Visit Carlingford we understand the difficulty in keeping the little ones occupied when off school. That is why we put together some great ideas to help you out.

Fitzpatrick’s Bar & Restaurant Halloween Fireworks Display

We all love a fireworks display, this is a great way for the entire family to see the beautiful fireworks display in a safe and controlled environment. This is a new event for Fitzpatrick’s Bar & Restaurant and we a thrilled about it. It will be on the 30th October at 6pm.

Visit Carlingford Pumpkin Carving Competition

This is a great way to get the kids using their imaginations, simply get them to carve a pumpkin. Drop it into the Visit Carlingford office on the Lough, on Friday 26th October. Voting will be open to the public over the weekend and a winner will be announced on Halloween itself. Winners will be presented with their fantastic prize in the spook-tacular office on Wednesday 31st October. For kids ages 4-15 years old.

Newcastle Hallowtides parade and Fireworks display

Looking for an amazing day out, catch the Carlingford Lough Ferry across the waters and travel up to Newcastle for the Hallowtides parade and fireworks display. The parade at 7pm and fireworks at 8pm.

Pumpkin Picking at O’Neills Flowers

Get the kids out in the fresh air and show them a little bit of nature. O’ Neills Flowers in Willville, Carlingford are hosting a great event where you can pick your very own grown pumpkin. See where and how pumpkins grow. O Neill’s have close to 1,000 pumpkins this year, so there is plenty to choose from.

Halloween Camp at Kilbroney Forest Park

Get the kids into the outdoors for some adventure and exploring through mountain biking, learning different skills both on and off the bike as we mix it up with the following activities Team games, Zip lining, Archery, Mountain biking and more. Best of all, not even a computer in sight! There is cost but it is worth it for a great day. Places on the camps always fill up fast and they are a great way to have the kids meet new friends, develop social skills, learn new practical skills and try new activities. Modern society lends itself towards a sedentary lifestyle and actively encouraging kids to explore the outdoors is vital to their holistic health and well being

The Festival of Horrors – Scare Experience

This is for the slightly braver, even teenagers…

The Festival of Horrors invites you to join the Order of The Father at Bellurgan Park this Halloween.
The Order of the Father have set up a commune at Bellurgan Park house for new members to join them on their spiritual journey. The Order under the leadership of ‘The Father’ denies the accusations of being a “cult,” allegations against them include ritual killings, self mutilation, brutal punishments, human sacrifices and ceremonies that are said to summon demons from the depths of hell itself.
The Festival of Horrors is at Bellurgan house from October 19th – 21st and October 26th – 30th.

Make sure to get tickets for this event.

Slieve Foye and Carlingford Mountain climb

This is for big kids, it is a great way to get teens away from their phones. This does require a level of fitness so check in with the organisers to ensure you are suitable to go. On Saturday 3rd November take on the challenge of the Slieve Foye the path is rocky and steep hillsides, it is graded hard. There is also a cost incurred and can include transport from Dublin. Starting in Carlingford make your way uphill through the streets to reach the open hillside and head up the saddle of Barnavave, before making the steep ascent to the summit of Slieve Foye (588m), the highest point in Co. Louth. Then follow the rocky crest of the mountain as it rises and falls over subsidiary tops to Eagles Rock, then on to Raven’s Rock and Foxes Rock. From there head east, traversing the mountain before dropping gradually to join the Tain Way path back into Carlingford. There should be time for some refreshments or an exploration of the village and small harbour before heading home.

If this is a little challenging for you then pop into the Visit Carlingford office and we will be sure to talk you through the best hikes and walks.

Still want more…

If you complete all these events and still want some more activities, then contact us and we can arrange anything from Laughter Yoga, Paint-balling, Go-Karting, Zip-lining, a Scavenger Hunt, a Dance Classes and much more!

Hens and Stags – Dos and Don’ts

We have put together a list of Do’s and Don’ts for Hen Parties and Stag Parties coming to Carlingford. Hopefully this list will give you further insight into the town of Carlingford and help you as you are planning your special trip of a lifetime.

DOs

1. Do make sure you leave the pub for a breather and check out the magnificent beauty of Carlingford.

We’re obviously biased but we hate to see groups leaving Carlingford without witnessing the breath-taking views and monuments around town. Fantastic activities that allow you to take in the village as you go are the Visit Carlingford Scavenger Hunt or the Carlingford E-Bikes. View the beauty of Carlingford from high up by walking the Slieve Foy mountain, the greenway or SkyPark.

2. Do be mindful of your neighbours.

As you know Visit Carlingford is home to some fabulous Self-Catering properties. Many of these properties are neighbours to Carlingford residents who see different groups come and go every weekend and who are incredibly patient with holiday-makers. Please be aware of noise levels and under no circumstances trespass onto somebody else’s property. Do not do anything you would not do at your own home. Be mindful and respectful.

Carlingford is here to be enjoyed by all but likewise everyone must feel safe and respected at all times.

3. Do try some Carlingford cuisine.

Carlingford is the home to some of the finest restaurants and food in the country.

Whether it’s fine dining, a bag of fish & chips, an Irish stew or a Carlingford Oyster there’s something to tickle everyone’s taste buds so do your homework, find out where best suits you and we can guarantee you won’t regret it.

4. Do keep an eye on the time..

We do recommend that groups try their best to run on schedule. If you are late for one activity it will not only complicate things for the supplier but it’ll mean that your whole schedule will be rushed and you may end up missing out on things.

If you show up late for a meal or an activity depending on how late you are you may lose your booking or shorten the time slot available. If you are late going out on the town you may have to wait longer on taxis or you may not get a seat together in a pub.

The only disco in Carlingford is Mc Kevitts Club M and it opens until approximately 2 – 2:30am so make sure you’re out early to make the very most of your night.

5. Do a pub crawl.

If you are fond of experiencing a few drinks, then we recommend a pub crawl. Too often groups only see the inside of one premises in the village for the entire weekend which is a shame considering that the different pubs all offer something different. Also, Carlingford is a small town, with all of the pubs in very close proximity so it makes sense to go to them all and find which suits your group best whether it’s country music & a chat with a local in The Carlingford Arms, a mouth-watering cocktail and disco dance in The Loft Cocktail Bar, the intimate setting of Ma Bakers old Irish bar, the renowned beer garden of Pj O’Hares or a relaxed drink in the chilled out Mc Kevitts Village Hotel. Do not drink beyond your limits. Nobody likes somebody who has taken it too far. So be sensible, be safe and enjoy yourselves.

6. Do not forget to enjoy yourselves & have fun.

Carlingford is a gorgeous lively town with so much to offer and there really is something for everyone. Kickback, relax & enjoy your stay.

DON’TS

1. Don’t book your trip with an unreliable company.

We have seen too many people come to us with complaints about bogus companies and disastrous accommodation when the damage has already been done. Unfortunately, there are bogus companies making false claims, providing inadequate services, working under several different names and even imitating other company names. Please shop around, ask lots of questions and read reviews before you make a booking. We hate to see people leaving Carlingford disappointed.

2. Don’t forget to plan ahead.

There are so many fun and exciting events running in and around Carlingford that may coincide with your trip that you don’t want to miss out on. Look at the Visit Carlingford calendar and do your research online. There’s everything from the National Leprechaun Hunt, the Carlingford Oyster Festival, world famous singers and musicians, donkey derbies, marathons, triathlons and tractor runs. You name it, we’ve got it.

3. Don’t drink on the streets.

Apart from it being against the law it’s also not going to do your party any favours. Carlingford is a small place and the doormen of the town all work together. If you or your group are seen drinking on the streets the doormen will make a mental note and you’re less likely to get in anywhere later on. Furthermore, Carlingford is a family friendly village and we intend to keep it this way, there’s plenty of time for drinking so please don’t make any difficulties for anyone by cracking open the drinks on the footpath.

4. Don’t carry blow up body parts around Carlingford.

Villagers don’t like them, many tourists don’t like them, many restaurants and businesses won’t accept them. We’re all on for letting your hair down and having fun but please don’t have blow-up body parts in public places.

5. Don’t Litter.

Carlingford is a magnificent town in numerous ways. Magnificent towns bring many tourists and with many tourists there are many advantages and very few disadvantages, however one of the drawbacks is litter. The Carlingford voluntary tidy towns committee have been working relentlessly to tackle this problem but we really need your help. Please leave it as you’ve found it. With so much natural beauty at our disposal it is so important that we protect it so that Carlingford will remain a beautiful place to live, work and visit for many years to come.

6. Don’t forget to breathe in some Carlingford air.

Whether it’s a walk to the top of sliabh foy mountain, or along the magnificent new greenway, a trip on the new Carlingford Lough Ferry or even an adventure activity, don’t forget to fill up those lungs with some Carlingford air before you go home.

Carlingford’s Top Spots for Seafood

Carlingford is bursting with options for our foodies and in terms of seafood, this beautiful fishing village does not disappoint.

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite spots to go for our underwater produce.

Fishy Dishy

So it’s all in the name really. The Carlingford Sailing Club is home to this little gem of a restaurant with breathtaking views of the Lough and mouth-watering food dishes to match. Fishy Dishy offers a homely welcome with the fire lit and a warm smile to greet you at the door.

Our favourite would have to be the Prawn Pil Pil starter followed by the fresh Dover sole with lemon, parsley and caper butter, emmmm! However, you will find a fish dish for everyone, and if there’s someone in the group who doesn’t fancy seafood, the steak is equally divine.

Harry’s Oystercatcher On Wheels

Local man Harry Jordan is no stranger to the restaurant business in Carlingford however these days you will find him and his magic mobile in the market square, dishing out succulent Carlingford Oysters and tasty seafood chowder to beat the band.

If you fancy a stroll around Carlingford, chowder in hand or even a quick and healthy take-away treat to bring home, look no further. Harry’s welcome along with Carlingford’s finest seafood produce is what it’s all about.

The Kingfisher Bistro

The infamous Kingfisher Bistro offers a lot more than just seafood but seafood they do excellently.

Soak up the lovely atmosphere and beautifully cooked fish in this exquisite restaurant and we can guarantee you’ll come back for more. A foodies’ paradise.

The Baytree Restaurant

It’s no wonder the Baytree have been the winners of numerous awards in the food stakes and if it’s excellence you’re looking for well then look no further.

Located on the main street in Carlingford this restaurant caters for more than just seafood lovers so there is something for everyone. The Baytree pride themselves on using as much local produce as possible and the results speak for themselves.

King Johns Castle Funding Announced – €400,000

Business owners, locals and interested parties arrived at Ghan House in Carlingford this morning, with keen interest to listen to Minister for Tourism Patrick O’ Donovan.

Welcomed with generous amounts of tea, coffee, tasty biscuits and scones ordained with Ireland’s Ancient Easts logo. Minister O’Donovan today arrived around 10:30 am with a team of people from the Office of Public works, Fáilte Ireland and locally elected representatives. Minister O’ Donovan visited Carlingford to make an announcement. There was definite excitement in the air.

What will be announced?

Better parking?

Better investment in the Heritage sites?

“Storytelling is vital in making the connection with visitors and while we have the assets, we still need to bring them to life.  A signature theme within the Ireland’s Ancient East brand is ‘Castles and Conquests’ and this funding will allow us to develop the visitor experience in Carlingford to bring this historic castle to life and to animate the history that lies within its walls.”

Minister Patrick O’Donovan announced a fantastic amount of €400k in funding from Fáilte Ireland’s Capital Grants Allocation for 2017 to the Office of Public Works (OPW) for the continued development of the iconic King John’s Castle in Carlingford.

The investment is badly needed.

King Johns Castle was initially built by Hugh DeLacy, but there is evidence it was perched on the rock long before DeLacys men put the hammer to stone. The site got its name from Englands King John. King John (famous from Robin Hoods classics)  invaded Ireland and met his nemesis Walter DeLacy where he fought him for ownership of Irelands East.

There is no evidence that King John stayed in Carlingford but it often rumoured he did. So, in quintessential Irish fashion, the title King John’s Castle seems to have been applied to the Castle either sarcastically or claim to fame.

In addition, the project includes the provision of performance infrastructure which will allow for the castle to be used as a setting for cultural events – providing an ideal platform for arts events against the dramatic backdrop of Carlingford Lough and the Cooley Mountains.

Today’s funding is the latest part of a significant €1.2 million refurbishment project carried out by the OPW at King John’s Castle in Carlingford. The project seeks to enhance the castle with better internal access for visitors,  improved visitor facilities including information and interpretation in line with Irelands Ancient Easts overall branding mission all topped off with attractive landscaping.   Ultimately the grant means people will finally be able to enjoy King Johns Castle from within as opposed to viewing it from afar.

Seán Canney our current Minister for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief commented on the announcement –

“I am delighted that Fáilte Ireland has invested in King John’s Castle in Carlingford.  It is a wonderful project that will enable visitors to enter the interior of the Castle for the first time, thereby, increasing tourism potential in the beautiful medieval town of Carlingford.  The funding under the Tourism Investment Programme will allow the story of the history of this 12th Century Castle to be brought to the visitor and will provide a platform for a range of events, creating an ideal location to begin your exploration of Ireland’s Ancient East.”

Chefs Choice : McKevitts Hotel & Schooners Restaurant

At McKevitts Village Hotel and Schooners Restaurant the food is delicious and simply prepared.

Using locally sourced ingredients , making homemade desserts and offering beautiful jams & chutneys to buy and take home , there is plenty to attract you to this long thriving family business.

Dining in the more intimate Schooners Restaurant or enjoying a local craft beer and a bite to eat in the Main Bar, the atmosphere is always relaxed, cosy and inviting.

McKevitts and Carlingford are famous for two things, fresh seafood and warm local service.

With every restaurant the kitchen staff want to bring you on a culinary journey.

We took a break from the office and had a chat with Siobhán , a member of the McKevitts family and Chef in McKevitts.

We asked her to give us three of her favourite dishes to both eat and prepare.
We were not disappointed, they were delicious.

Wild Mushroom Bruschetta Delight

Wild Mushroom Bruschetta with our rocket & roasted garlic pesto, balsamic reduction, topped with rocket & parmesan.

“Our take on the classic “mushroom on toast”, we sauté our mixed wild mushrooms very simply with butter & olive oil seasoned with salt, cracked black pepper, freshly grated nutmeg (which intensifies the mushroom flavour) & finish with a dash of fresh cream. These are served on our warm toasted Ciabatta bread which is the perfect sponge to soak up all the delicious mushroom juices. We serve this with our homemade fresh rocket and roasted garlic pesto & fresh salad of rocket & parmesan shavings, the peppery flavour of the rocket & the hit of garlic from the pesto really complement the deep earthy flavours of the mushrooms. A tasty well balanced dish which has proven to be a popular choice.”

Warm Pork Belly Salad

Warm Pork Belly Salad with toasted nuts & seeds, pink lady apple topped with a black pepper & roasted fennel mayonnaise.

“When creating this dish we took inspiration from a the classic Waldorf salad which consisted of fresh apple, toasted walnuts & celery combined in a mayonnaise dressing, a original 70’s salad buffet delight. As apple & pork complement each other so well we decide to go with a Waldorf inspired salad. So we simply toss our fresh mixed salad leaves, shards of pink lady apple, diced celery & spring onion with our honey & mustard dressing, scatter that with toasted mixed nuts & seeds, top with our warm slow cooked succulent pulled pork belly meat & finally top with our creamy roasted fennel seed & cracked black peppercorn mayonnaise. Each & every one of the textures & flavours complement each other. It’s original & it works!”

Homemade Crispy Fish Cake

Homemade Crispy Fish Cake with fresh salmon, hake & cod, flavoured with capers & dill, served on with our tarragon & lemon mayonnaise.

“When you visit a coastal town & decide to stay & have a bit to eat, seafood is generally at the for front of people’s minds. A fish cake can be a popular choice, but in my experience they can some times really disappoint, very little fish, full of potato & flat on flavour. We make our fish cakes using fresh cod, salmon & hake, we use three quarters fish to one quarter potato ratio so they are really meaty with fresh fish. We flavour our fish cake with fresh dill, spring onion, fresh parsley, mini capers, lemon zest & salt & black pepper. The cakes are moulded, coated in crumbs twice and then deep fried until golden & crisp. They are served simply on our house salad which is garnished with a beautiful complementary mayonnaise made with tarragon, roasted fennel & fresh lemon. Altogether a deliciously light dish that’s packed with fresh zesty flavours that marry so well with the delicate flavours of fresh fish.”

We’re a little peckish now!

With tasty dishes such as these, it is worth a visit for sure.

Book now through info@visitcarlingford.com for your special occasion; birthday, hen/stag, family get together or just a night out to enjoy some good food.

The Perfect Proposal

“As soon as I saw you

I knew an adventure was about to happen”

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie is a wise character.

After all, love should be an adventure, as much as possible anyway.

Whether it seems like something minor or a huge step, beginning any new journey with the person you love can be so exciting.
One of the most exciting steps on that journey can be the moment you decide to ‘pop the question’, as they say.
Months or years could lead up to this.

The moment you decide, ‘Holy Moly, I don’t think I will ever fancy another person as much as this lad/lassie right here’!
So, when you do realise it, what do you do then?

Enter, Propose 2 Me….

The unique idea came to local entrepreneur, Arlene Malone, having had an overseas marriage proposal and wedding herself.
She noticed that there was no alternative in Ireland offering a bespoke proposal planning service for the potential male or female seeking that ‘something special’ or even simply advice for the person that didn’t know where to start.

This simple idea took off.
Champagne bubbles, scented candles, twinkling lights and the subtle notes of a lingering violin are just some of the details that Propose 2 Me use to set the scene for your most memorable proposal.

Having established a partner early on, in the form of 5 Star Luxury Hotel, The Merchant, in Belfast city this encouraged some well-deserved attention to the new brand, Propose 2 Me.
Since then, Propose 2 Me has created picture perfect proposals in some of the most beautiful locations in Ireland.

Recently, none other than our very own medieval town of Carlingford.
The Abbey, a 14th century Dominican Friary, was the location of choice.

Using the natural beauty and history of the area lended itself perfectly to a unique proposal in Carlingford.
The happy couple spoke so highly of the service provide by the team at Propose 2 Me and only wished they could do it all over again!

So, are you thinking about it?
A proposal in Carlingford?

Whether you call Ireland home and want to make a short trip to Carlingford or you wish to start your adventure from further afield, Carlingford, nestled at the foot of the Slieve Foy mountains and sitting on Carlingford Lough will sweep you off your feet.

And a unique, bespoke proposal with Propose 2 Me will allow you to sweep your special someone off their feet!

10 Free Things to do in Carlingford

Carlingford has enjoyed some fantastically positive media over recent months and we’re confident when we say, it really is not surprising. At a recent community think tank, we discussed the reasons people come to Carlingford. One that always stands out is of course the location of Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula, a spot of outstanding natural beauty.

However, it is not just what you can see when you get here. There are the smells, the sounds, the feeling and the people that provide a place with its artistry and charm. While we recommend you visit for a few days and enjoy some fine food, culture and fun activities, there is a lot to do in our little town, free of charge. With this in mind, we have compiled (in no particular order) our top ten list for you.

1. Steeped in History

Carlingford really has some incredible history to share and behold. The history and stories of Carlingford span right through the ages of Celtic myths and Legends. Carlingford has some of the finest examples of architecture from the medieval period, with Castles and Merchant houses located throughout the town. Each of the locations have been adorned with a plaque explaining a brief history of the landmark.

You can also use our website to help find the locations and read the accompanying history.

2. Let the Walking do the Talking!

Fancy a Walk? Well then you’re in luck.

Carlingford is going to spoil you with an abundance of strolling or hiking options. There are lots of maps available for varying abilities or you can keep walking along the sign posted routes until your heart is content.

One of many the routes guide you through the village and up the mountainside of Slieve Foy. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a leprechaun!

Don’t forget that no matter which route you decide to take, always ensure to you have a good pair of trekking shoes, raingear , keep hydrated and have a mobile phone. It is always advised that you make somebody aware where you are going and when you plan to return.

3. The Magic Hill

Have you ever been to a place where things go backwards?

Less than a 15 minute drive from Carlingford you’ll find a place known locally as Magic Hill. There is a section of road that goes downhill and if you stop the car at the bottom and release the brake, the car will roll backwards up the hill! It needs to be seen to be believed.

To help you on your way; As you leave Dundalk, take the R173 to Carlingford. Halfway along you will spot a Texaco Petrol Station. Take the first left after this, where you’ll see a sign for McCrystals Food Store and signs for the Táin Trail and Oriel Trail. Follow the road around and past McCrystals until you reach a T-Junction. Turn right and immediately left on the other side, again following signs for the Táin and Oriel Trails. Follow the road straight to the brow of the hill, go down into a dip and stop immediately next to the big mushroom.

Have fun!

4. Crab Fishing

All you really need is a piece of string, bait and a weight heavy enough to keep the bait of the bottom. Crabs like bait such as bacon, chicken, fish and the like. You don’t need the good bits – use the bits that you throw away in a big soggy mess. Crabs are not that fussy when it comes to their dinner!

Let your line drop right to the bottom where the crabs live. Wrap a little line loosely around your finger and wait until you feel the crabs pulling.

The two piers of Carlingford Lough are a favourite spot during the busy summer months.

5. Pier Jumping

An all-time favourite and always great fun for adults and kids alike. Although Carlingford Lough is tidal, never fear, Carlingford offers two superb pontoons. This activity is normally done at the end of your water activity if you booked with Carlingford Adventure Centre.

As always with the water, there are some risk concerns that need to be addressed before you dive off the edge. There was a great piece written by Jack of Lifeguards Ireland about the safety concerns of pier jumping.   Like everything, don’t be foolish or careless, take caution in anything to do in the water, make sure you are with people and ensure you have appropriate clothing.

6. Bird Watching

Bird watching is not just for bird enthusiasts. It can be a relaxing and enjoyable pastime for anyone. Carlingford has beaches and mudflats with mountains and woods nearby. Buzzard, Raven and Dipper are found on the Carlingford Mountains, while the forests on Slieve Foye support Jay, Crossbill, Long-eared Owl,Woodcock and Grasshopper Warbler.

From the pier at Carlingford in Winter, scan the bay for Grebes, Divers and Scaup. Rarities have included Black-throated and White-billed Divers and Slavonian Grebe. Continue past the Carlingford Sailing Club, back to the main road scanning for water birds. Harbour seals lounge on the rocks, and Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper occur on passage.

Continue on to a small inlet, Shilties Lough, and from the smaller road, look for Lapwing,Teal,Wigeon, Kingfisher and Yellowhammer. Greenore Port is excellent for Black Guillemots in Spring and for terns, which nest on nearby Green Island. Ballagan Point is good for seawatching (Long-tailed Skua have been seen). At Whitestown beach, Mediterranean Gulls and White Wagtails are regular and Sand Martins nest in the sand-cliffs.

You can download a guide to birdwatching for carlingford.

7. The Greenway

Following on from point two and a very recent project to open, the Greenway has already proved a fantastic addition to our local walking routes. The 6.2km greenway cycle & walking path from Omeath to Carlingford follows the route of the old DN&G Railway line between the Carlingford Marina and Griers Quay continuing on to the village of Omeath.

It allows cyclists and walkers to enjoy a safe track along the scenic coast of Carlingford Lough.

8. Folklore Park

Just along the shore, beside the underground replica tunnel of the Last Leprechauns of Ireland you’ll find local leprechaun whisperer, Kevin Woods. Kevin (affectionately known as McCoillte) and his family have created Folklore Park, an admission free park for people to visit and enjoy.

A donation is welcomed. Dotted throughout the Folklore Park you can learn about local myths and legends and view art pieces representing them.

9. Cycling Routes

The mountains surrounded Carlingford town boast some of the finest open mountain XC trails in the country amongst stunning scenery and exciting descents. The routes can be accessed via Carlingford town or Ravensdale Forest. Slieve Foy has fantastic XC trails ranging from one to six hour routes and if you can concentrate on both, you can take in some superb scenery on the way down.

10. Heritage Centre

The aim of the Carlingford Heritage Centre is to give the visitor a deeper exploration of the narrow streets and antiquities of this venerable, charming place. Located in a beautifully restored medieval church, the Heritage Centre houses exhibits the development of the town from its Norman origins.

The building has retained its original function as a place of assembly and, as such, is ideal for weddings, concerts, exhibitions, recitals and small theatrical productions.

The Heritage Centre has, on permanent display, the documented history of the town with the first references to the Vikings in the area circa 850 AD, through the Anglo Norman and Medieval eras right through into modern times. This historical exhibit is embellished with maps, drawings, illustrations, photographs and a DVD presentation for all to enjoy.

So whether you want to brush up on your medieval history or just wish to drink in the scenery, we promise you a great time when you arrive in Carlingford. For any information you require, don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Visit Carlingford Team.

Enjoying a Steak Night Special – McKevitt’s Village Hotel

A Super Steak Night Special

What better way to spend your Monday evening than being treated to an exquisite steak dinner in the comfort of Mc Kevitt’s Village Hotel, Carlingford.

This is exactly how the Visit Carlingford team enjoyed last Monday evening and I can say on behalf of the group that this Mc Kevitts’ Meal Deal lived up to all of the hype.

The very friendly Zelda, Elaine and the rest of the staff took care of us from the moment we walked through the door, ensuring that we didn’t want for a thing. The warm cosy atmosphere of Mc Kevitt’s Bar and Restaurant never disappoints me but there was something rather unique about the place last Monday. As our evening drew on, it dawned on me that the Carlingford locals were out in force.

Perhaps Monday is becoming the local’s night in the village in a bid to unwind after Carlingford’s hectic weekend action?

We ordered three 10oz Steaks, cooked; Medium, Medium-Rare and Well-Done. I mention the three as they were each cooked magnificently to our request. Hats off to the chef for the meticulous care and attention to detail applied.

As always, we went for a selection of sides to avoid missing out on any of the fun and my oh my, they were scrumptious. Our spread included; Creamy Pepper Sauce, Fresh Side Salad, Home-Cut Chunky Chips, Baby Boils, Fried Onions and a mixture of succulently cooked Carrots, Beetroot and Green Beans; with just the right zest and bite.

The meal went down even better with pints and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for good measure. As part of this Monday Steak Night deal, Mc Kevitt’s offer a bottle of wine with two 10oz Sirloins/Rib Eyes for €50. It would be rude not to!

Mid-way through our meal the music began. Monday nights in Mc Kevitt’s see local legend Henry Mac playing alongside the very talented Mc Collum Brothers, all tucked in front of the open fire for a live session of musical treats. Playing a range of traditional music and instruments, it was a pleasure to behold. The men play really well together in their comfortable, chilled out space and we could happily have sat or indeed danced all night if time had allowed it. To begin, the music started off nice and slow with a captivating rendition of Christy Moores famed Black is the Colour, lending itself as background noise for the chat amongst the crowd. By the time we were leaving they had turned it up a notch, setting the scene for a true Irish Session to ensue. The upbeat tunes were the perfect invitation to take to the floor.

Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and look forward to returning very soon.

GREAT DEALS FROM McKEVITTS

Included in Mc Kevitt’s Specials are:

Boozy Bull Monday which offers;

Somebody who may not like the idea of the kayaking at least has the excitement of the cocktail party or perhaps can relish the thought of tasting the local cuisine. Once you maintain a level of variety there will be something for everyone.
  • Collecting Money; every chief bridesmaid’s biggest bother. As soon as the hen destination has been established give each person four dates as the deadlines for money payment installments. Set-up a bank transfer to save you the hassle of running around after people. Pay as much as you can before you arrive to the destination so you can relax and enjoy the party. Use Visit Carlingford representative to take care of all the bookings and payments for you. Have money collected BEFORE you arrive and so that the drinks can start to flow.

Things To Avoid:

  • Avoid more than one group member corresponding with a booking enquiry which will only confuse both parties and can lead to double bookings, mixed messages, differing arrangements and money difficulties. Delegate jobs and stick to your task only.
  • Avoid bad time-management. For example, if you’re late for the hair and makeup appointment you’ll be rushing for the other activities and before you know it dinner has ran over and you’ve lost the reserved area in the Disco Bar. With larger group’s time-management is essential considering there will usually be unforeseen hiccups anyway so stick to the schedule as much as possible.
  • Do not come unprepared. If you’ve planned Paintballing don’t expect you’re newly embellished cons to make it out alive, just the same way if you’re doing the scavenger hunt you may need a raincoat along with the sunnies. Prepare for all eventualities for a more enjoyable trip.
  • Don’t plan every minute. Some people like down time to prepare for the next phase. Sometimes activities may run over. Very often the natural flow of conversation is more enjoyable than a quiz on the colour of the Brides underwear. Activities and games are brilliant but don’t overdo them.
